is epoxy waterproof

Epoxy is one of the most versatile materials for craft projects, repairs, model making, and industrial applications. But if you want to use epoxy for a specific purpose, it's important to understand its properties.

Is epoxy waterproof? Can you use it around food? How heat-resistant is it, really?

In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions about epoxy. This will help you work more safely and efficiently – whether you're making jewelry, producing casting molds, or sealing surfaces.

Is epoxy waterproof?

Yes – epoxy is completely waterproof once it has cured.

This is precisely why epoxy is often used for boats, waterproof casting molds, and as a protective coating on wooden or metal surfaces. After curing, it forms a hard, impermeable barrier against moisture.

Waterproof properties:

  • Ideal for outdoor use (provided it is protected against UV)
  • Very suitable for sealing wood, stone or metal.
  • Popular for silicone molds used with water or gel

Tip:
Always allow the epoxy to fully cure (usually 24–48 hours) before contact with water. For long-term outdoor use, consider using an additional sealer.

Is epoxy food safe?

That depends on the type of epoxy.
Most epoxy products are not food-safe by default , but there are exceptions.

Standard epoxy (such as casting or modeling epoxy):

  • Not suitable for direct contact with food.
  • Do not use for dishes, cups or cutting boards.
  • Avoid applications where food touches the epoxy

Food safe epoxy
:

  • Specially developed for food contact
  • Always clearly marked as "food-safe epoxy" by the manufacturer

Important: At Siliconesandmore.com we do not recommend using standard epoxy ( such as Apoxie Sculpt ) in food applications unless explicitly labeled as food safe.

Is epoxy heat resistant?

Yes – but up to a certain temperature.

Heat resistance depends on the type of epoxy you use. For example:

Apoxie Sculpt :

  • Heat resistant up to 160°C
  • Suitable for indoor use and applications with light heat loads.

NB:

  • Most epoxies soften above 100–160°C
  • Constant heat may cause discoloration or degradation
  • Not suitable for hot pans, stoves or open fire.

Do you need an epoxy for high temperatures? Always check the technical specifications beforehand.
