Spreadable Silicones (4)
Why choose spreadable silicones?
Spreadable silicones are two-component RTV-2 systems with a thick, non-slump consistency. You apply them with a spatula to vertical surfaces and build up the mould layer by layer.
These systems are ideal for larger surfaces and complex shapes where liquid silicones run off and kneadable putty offers too little control.
Curing mechanism: RTV 2 stands for room temperature vulcanizing with 2 components. Mix part A and part B according to the instructions and apply with a spatula or brush.
Who it is for: Mould makers, SFX studios, architectural model makers and industrial prototypers who want to take moulds of large or vertical surfaces with precise layer build-up.
Key benefits
- ✓Non-slump and non-flowing stays on vertical surfaces without sagging
- ✓Layer build-up possible apply several layers to reach the desired wall thickness
- ✓Large surfaces efficient for sculptures, reliefs and architectural elements
- ✓Various hardnesses choose from soft to firm depending on the application
- ✓Can be combined with liquid silicones use as a skin layer before pouring the support mould
Application methods
- →Brush-on or spatula mould apply to the model layer by layer
- →Skin layer for complex moulds first layer spreadable, then pour with liquid silicone
- →Vertical and overhead surfaces ideal where other systems run off
Processing & curing
Ideal conditions
Temperature: Work at around 20 to 25°C on clean, dry models.
Environment: Avoid dust, oil and latex. Follow the pot life and demould time of each product.
- Addition-cure systems: platinum-based catalyst
- Condensation-cure systems: tin-based catalyst
- Both variants available as a spreadable system
Modifiers
Pigments add colour for visual control of each layer.
Release use a suitable release agent with epoxy, PU or polyester.
- Suitable for casting epoxy, polyurethane and polyester
- Seal porous masters beforehand
Tips for the best result
Mixing & processing
- → Measure accurately, mix A and B evenly
- → Mix until the colour is uniform
- → Apply the first layer thinly, let it cure before the next layer
Application techniques
- → Use a stiff spatula or brush for even distribution
- → Choose the right release agent for each system
- → Follow the recommendations on the product page
Storage
- → Store components cool and dry
- → Close packaging tightly after use
- → Observe the shelf life of each product
