What is bodycasting (Body Cast)?

Body casting—also called lifecasting—is the process of making a negative mold on the skin and then casting a positive impression.

Alginate 3D gel is dried seaweed powder that you mix with water: skin-safe, flows into fine details, and is ideal for pouring or dipping. Want to brush it on? Use slightly less water.

Quick silicone (skin-friendly) is perfect for iron-on molds and reusable body molds. Always protect hair with Vaseline and test on a small area of skin first.

Step-by-step plan: making a handprint, making plaster hands and making footprints

1. Choose your mold material

  • Alginate 3D gel – comfortable, one-time mold (best for hand-holding poses)
  • Quick silicone – apply with Thixo A; ideal for complex shapes

2. Make a support mold

Use a bucket or build a support hood with plaster cast.

3. Pour the impression material

In alginate: plaster/model cast (most popular), silicone, or chocolate. No polyurethane in alginate!

4. Demolding & finishing

Carefully demould, wash/dry, seal where necessary and finish with primer and gilding wax or paint.

Choose: alginate 3D Gel or fast Silicone

Frequently asked questions

Which set do I choose for a handprint?

Start with a handprint kit using alginate 3D gel and plaster. For reuse and added detail, choose a skin-friendly silicone hand mold.

Is alginate safe for skin?

Yes. Alginate is dried seaweed and is harmless with clean water. Do not combine with polyurethane.

Can I make a family handprint or holding hands pose?

Absolutely. Use a tall bucket and plenty of alginate, plan the pose, remain still during the placement, and use a plaster cast as an external support.

How do I prevent it from pulling hair?

Always use Vaseline and remove the mold slowly. Test on a small area first.

What's the difference: alginate vs. silicone mold?

Alginate: comfortable, disposable. Silicone: durable and often even more detailed; ideal for multiple castings.

"Plaster Hands Action"—What's the Difference with Professional Sets?

Budget kits are useful for a first trial run. Professional body casting kits provide more detail, better strength, and consistent results.
