Why use a water-repellent agent?

With the right stone impregnation product, you can waterproof your stone and make your facade long-lasting. This page explains which products work (water-based or solvent-based silane/siloxane), how to apply them, and what to consider for a lasting result.

  • Protection against driving rain, frost damage, lime efflorescence and contamination
  • Vapor permeable: allows moisture to escape from the wall, but repels water
  • Invisible: colorless, retains the original appearance
  • Durable: years of effectiveness with proper preparation and application

SEO note: Many people also search for “water repellent” – the same solution is referred to as water repellent .

Selecting a hydrophobic agent (silane/siloxane)

Silane/Siloxane (Facade)

  • Deep penetration, reacts in capillaries (hydrophobic effect)
  • Suitable for brick, concrete, sand-lime brick and natural stone*
  • Available in water-based and solvent-based

Silicone Emulsion (PDMS)

  • Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion, water-dilutable and easy to use
  • Forms a water-repellent film; ideal for maintenance and textiles
  • Can be used as a top coat/maintenance after silane/siloxane

*Note: Always test on a sample surface when using natural stone ; some types of stone may discolour or shine differently.

Self-Waterproofing: Step-by-step plan

  1. Inspection & Cleaning – Remove algae, salt efflorescence, grease, and loose particles. Let the wall dry completely.
  2. Masking – Cover windows, frames, metal and plants.
  3. Test area – Always test 0.5–1 m² first for absorption and appearance.
  4. Application – Apply wet-on-wet with low pressure (spraying) or rolling. Work from bottom to top.
  5. Post-treatment – Remove excess material from hard parts immediately; allow to harden according to the data sheet.

Do's

  • Dry, clean surface (RH < 80%, no rain expected)
  • Temperature 5–25°C, no full sun or frost
  • Sufficient material consumption (saturation is key)

Don'ts

  • Facades with moisture problems without addressing the cause
  • Spraying on paintwork, glass or metal (may cause stains)
  • Respraying vapor-tight paint/systems (risk of blistering)

Surfaces: brick, concrete and natural stone

  • Brick & mortar: standard choice: silane/siloxane (deep penetration)
  • Concrete: choose silane (low molecular weight) for better penetration
  • Natural stone: first test area (sensitive to color deepening)

Frequently asked questions about impregnating your own wall

Which product is the best waterproofing agent for my facade?

For mineral surfaces, silane/siloxane impregnators offer the most durable performance. If you're working on textiles or need maintenance/coating, a silicone emulsion is suitable.

How long does a stone impregnation agent remain effective?

Depending on the substrate, weather conditions, and product: typically several years. Proper cleaning and saturation extend the lifespan.

Is there a chance of discoloration?

Colorless products are designed to preserve appearance. Always test a sample area; natural stone can show nuances.

Can I do this waterproofing myself or is it better to call in a professional?

With a good step-by-step plan and the right tools, you can tackle many projects yourself. Large or vulnerable facades? Consider hiring a professional.

What do people mean by "waterproofing agent"?

That's a common misspelling for waterproofing agent. It refers to the same product.
