Water-repellent silane/siloxane emulsion for stone, concrete, ceramics and building materials
BRB Siloen® 5022 WR is a water-thinnable, solvent-free silane/siloxane emulsion concentrate with 50% active substance (by weight). Diluted with tap water, it makes porous mineral and alkaline substrates permanently water repellent without clogging the pores: the material stays breathable. It works on facades and masonry, and just as well on your own castings in concrete, cement and cast stone, on terracotta and unglazed ceramics, on sculptures in sandstone or limestone and on precast building materials. During application ethanol is released and the emulsion converts into a silicone resin within the substrate. The concentrate is a milky white liquid with a density of 0.95 g/cm³ at 25 °C and a pH of 6 to 8. Siloen 5022 WR was developed to replace solvent-based silane/siloxane water repellents and also works as a deeply penetrating primer under paints, renders and concrete coatings.
Key Benefits
- 50% active substance: economical concentrate, dilute with water to 5 to 10% active substance for masonry and castings, or further for impregnating building materials.
- Deep penetration: excellent penetration depth into porous substrates, for protection deep within the material.
- Breathable: high resistance to capillary water without clogging the pores, the material keeps breathing.
- Fast water repellency: the beading effect appears within minutes, with optimum performance after a few days.
- Protection against rain, frost and salts: protects against rain and runoff water and chloride penetration, and prevents efflorescence and the growth of micro-organisms such as algae and moss.
- Alkali resistant: highly resistant to alkalis, so suitable for freshly cured concrete, cement and mortar.
- Invisible: does not alter the appearance of the substrate, the colour and texture of the facade or casting are preserved.
- Solvent-free and stable: water-based, stable in storage even when diluted, replaces solvent-based water repellents.
- Primer with adhesion: as a primer it provides good paint adhesion, even at high dilution.
⚠️ Only for porous, mineral substrates
Siloen 5022 WR bonds chemically to mineral materials. On other materials no durable bond forms, so it is not suitable for:
- Textiles and leather: fabrics need dedicated textile emulsions that cure with a catalyst and heat
- Wood, paper, cardboard, metal, glass and plastics
- Plaster and gypsum-based casting materials, and dense natural stone such as marble
- Cosmetics and skin contact: this is a technical product containing a preservative and it is classified as a skin and eye irritant
- Surfaces in contact with food or drink: there is no food contact declaration
Typical Applications
- Facades and masonry: making brick, tiles, limestone, sandstone, concrete and mortar water repellent
- Your own castings in concrete, cement and cast stone: protecting planters, tiles, stepping stones, candle holders, decorations and concrete furniture made in silicone or PU moulds against moisture, frost damage, staining, efflorescence and growth
- Terracotta, earthenware and unglazed ceramics: making flower pots, garden ornaments and low-fired ceramic products less absorbent
- Sculptures and objects in natural stone: sandstone and limestone for indoor and outdoor use, such as garden statues, memorial stones and restoration work
- Precast and industry: impregnating building materials such as clay, concrete, concrete products, aerated concrete, sand-lime brick, fibre cement, mineral fibres and lightweight aggregate, by spraying or dipping
- Primer: water-repellent, deeply penetrating primer under emulsion paints, renders and concrete coatings, also as an additive to acrylic primers for those formulating their own impregnating paint primers
- Hollow objects: making hollow, porous stone objects water repellent from the inside
Processing instructions:
- Allow new masonry and cast concrete or cement to cure for at least 2 weeks. The substrate must be dry and clean, so castings must also be free of release agent residue.
- For masonry and castings, dilute 1 part concentrate with 4 to 9 parts tap water (5 to 10% active substance). For ordinary brick we recommend 1 to 7. Very dense, high-quality concrete may need 1 to 2 for sufficient penetration.
- For impregnating building materials, dilute 1 to 20 up to 1 to 50, depending on the material and the method (spraying or dipping). Dense fibre cement boards need a different dilution than low-fired ceramics, so test on a sample first.
- Always stir the solution before use. Diluted solutions may cream, stirring makes the emulsion homogeneous again without loss of performance.
- Apply with a brush, roller or preferably a garden sprayer or low-pressure airless sprayer. Small castings can also be briefly dipped. Treat a whole wall or a whole object in one go.
- Preferably apply 2 coats wet-on-wet for full coverage. If you wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second, the beading effect will cause an uneven surface.
- Allow 0.8 to 1.5 litres of diluted solution per m², depending on the absorbency of the substrate.
- The water-repellent effect develops within minutes, especially at high temperature and low humidity. The best result is achieved after a few days.
Please note
- Not suitable for plaster and for low-absorbency, dense natural stone such as marble.
- If you want to paint or bond the object afterwards, use the product as a primer and check the adhesion of your paint or adhesive on a sample first.
- Do not apply in the rain. If it starts to rain, stop and cover the treated areas.
- Do not apply to extremely hot substrates: too rapid evaporation of water reduces the penetration depth and can cause surface problems.
- Ethanol is released during application. Ensure good ventilation.
- The concentrate contains a small amount of preservative. Depending on the water quality a biocide may be needed after dilution, with demineralised water a dilution remains stable for at least 6 months.
- Wear nitrile rubber gloves and safety glasses with side shields and avoid release to the environment: the product is toxic to aquatic life.
- Store the product tightly closed in the original packaging in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Shelf life: see the expiry date on the label (approx. 12 months after production).
