Working safely with diisocyanates (PU) | REACH training

Several of our polyurethane (PU/PUR) products contain diisocyanates. Since 24 August 2023, a training requirement applies across the European Union for the industrial and professional use of these products. This page explains what the rules involve, who they apply to and how to complete the mandatory training.

The legislation in brief

The requirement stems from the European REACH Regulation, Annex XVII, entry 74 (introduced by Regulation (EU) 2020/1149). REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals and protects people and the environment from the risks of chemical substances.

In short: since 24 August 2023, diisocyanates may no longer be used industrially or professionally unless one of these conditions is met:

  • the concentration of diisocyanates is below 0.1% by weight, or
  • the user has successfully completed training on the safe use of diisocyanates before use.
⚠️ The training must be completed before first use and renewed at least once every five years.

Who does this apply to?

The requirement applies to industrial and professional users: any worker or self-employed person who handles diisocyanate-containing products with a monomer concentration above 0.1% in the course of their work. The employer or self-employed person is responsible for ensuring the training is completed before use.

Private (consumer) users are not subject to this training requirement. The general safety measures on the label and in the safety data sheet naturally still apply.

Where are diisocyanates found?

Diisocyanates occur in many two-component polyurethane systems: rigid PU plastic, rigid and flexible PU foams and flexible polyurethane, as well as in some coatings, adhesives and paints. The risk exists only while the product is still liquid and not (fully) cured.

Products to which the requirement applies carry the legally required statement on the label:

⚠️ "As from 24 August 2023 adequate training is required before industrial or professional use."

Our products that require training

The training requirement applies to the following products for professional and industrial use (diisocyanates above 0.1%):

  • Polytek PT Flex 50
  • Polytek PT Flex 60
  • Polytek PT Flex 85
  • Polytek PT Flex 90

Not sure whether a product falls under the regulation? Check section 3 of the safety data sheet (SDS) or contact us.

The three training levels

The level required depends on the risk of your work, not on the product alone:

  • Level I, Basic: general low-risk applications, such as working at room temperature with good ventilation.
  • Level II, Intermediate: higher-risk applications, for example casting, mixing or working with larger quantities.
  • Level III, Advanced: high-risk applications, such as spraying or working at elevated temperatures.

On the training platform you select the level that matches your situation.

How do you complete the training?

The training is offered via safeusediisocyanates.eu, an initiative of the European industry (FEICA, ISOPA and ALIPA). It can be completed online as self-study for a fee. Use of this platform is not mandatory, but there are currently no other recognised providers.

  • Go to the platform and select your language.
  • Choose the training that matches your application and risk level.
  • Register, complete the training and keep your certificate.
  • Renew the training at least once every five years.
