Thixotropic agent for gelcoats and top layers on vertical surfaces

A1 Thixotropic A (Thix A) is a liquid additive that thickens A1 acrylic resin (Acrylic One) into a gel. Use it to make a gelcoat or top layer that stays in place, even in moulds with vertical or overhanging parts. Add Thix A to the A1 mix until you reach the thickness you want, up to a maximum of 2 % of the total weight. Adding more reduces the effect.

Application

1. Mix A1 liquid and A1 powder until smooth.
2. Add pigment and/or materials such as dry sand or metal powder if required.
3. Add Thix A until the desired thickness is reached, up to a maximum of 2 % of the total weight.
4. Brush the top layer into the mould with a layer thickness of at least 1 mm.
5. Once the top layer has gelled, normally after 20 to 30 minutes, apply the next layer of A1 within 1 hour, with glass fibre reinforcement if needed. This gives the best adhesion between layers.

Points to note

• ✓ More than 2 % Thix A reduces the thickening effect.
• ✓ Work above 10 °C, ideally at 20 °C.
• ✓ Stored in closed packaging, cool, frost-free and out of direct sunlight, the shelf life is at least 1 year.
