Kneadable glass fibre epoxy for a rigid support shell around your silicone mould

The Epoxy Support Shell Glass Fibre Set is a two-component epoxy with glass fibre that you use to make a rigid support shell (mother mould) around a silicone mould. Component A is a grey-white kneadable paste, component B a blue liquid. After kneading, you roll the mass out into a sheet and press it over the cured silicone mould. The support shell holds the flexible mould in shape during casting, so you can work with a thin layer of silicone. You have 20 to 30 minutes of working time and the epoxy is cured after 10 to 12 hours.

    Key benefits

    • Kneadable: you shape the mass over the mould by hand.
    • Glass fibre reinforced: a rigid shell that keeps the silicone mould in shape.
    • Even thickness: rolls out between battens to a sheet of approximately 3 to 5 mm.
    • Saves silicone: a thin brush-on mould with a support shell instead of a solid block mould.
    • Can be finished: you can sand the cured shell for a smoother surface.

    Typical applications

    • ✓ Support shells around brush-on silicone moulds
    • ✓ Moulds of ornaments, decorative concrete and sculptures
    • ✓ Feet on larger moulds, kneaded from fresh epoxy and attached to the shell

    Processing

    1. Weigh component A onto a piece of film and add component B in the correct ratio.
    2. Wearing gloves, knead thoroughly until you have an even mass without streaks.
    3. Place the mass between two layers of film, put a batten on each side and roll the mass out with a rolling pin into a sheet of even thickness.
    4. Remove the top film, drape the sheet over the cured silicone mould with the film side facing out and press it down everywhere, with no air between silicone and epoxy. Then remove the outer film as well.
    5. Let the sheets overlap by about 1 cm and massage the seams together well.
    6. Let the epoxy cure, then carefully remove the support shell from the silicone mould.

    Points to note

    • ✓ Do not mix more epoxy than you can use within the working time of 20 to 30 minutes.
    • ✓ Always wear gloves. Cured epoxy is difficult to remove from skin and work surfaces.
    • ✓ Once cured, the support shell withstands temperatures up to approximately 50 °C.
    • ✓ Store the support shell with the silicone mould so that the mould always keeps its correct shape.
