Sulphur-free plasteline for fine detail and mould making
Chavant NSP is a sulphur-free, non-drying, wax-based modelling clay from the American manufacturer Chavant. It stays workable indefinitely, holds very fine detail and, according to Chavant, is silicone- and solvent-friendly. That means you can make a mould straight off your clay model. NSP can be warmed to soften it and becomes liquid from about 97 °C, so you can also pour it. Available in three grades: Soft, Medium and Hard.

Processing
- Warm the clay to make it more pliable; Soft softens from about 49 °C, Medium from about 52 °C and Hard from about 54 °C.
- Model and finish with sculpting tools. Brushing works at about 85 °C, a trowel or spatula at about 80 °C.
- To pour, melt the clay to about 97 °C.
- Remove clay residue from tools and surfaces with naphtha or 99% isopropyl alcohol.
Points to note
- ✓ When working with addition-cure (platinum) silicones, always do a small test on a piece of clay first.
- ✓ Do not overheat the clay and do not use an open flame.
- ✓ Store opened clay airtight or wrapped in plastic and away from light to prevent oxidation.
- ✓ Unopened shelf life is 2 years at room temperature, away from sun and UV light.
