How polishing works:
Polishing makes a surface smoother. With a rough surface, you usually start by sanding with sandpaper or sanding pads and water. You work your way from coarse-grit sandpaper to fine-grit sandpaper. Sanding is usually taken up to a grit of 2000 or 2500 before you move on to polishing compounds.
Surfaces are easiest to polish with a polishing machine. A dual action polisher is the best choice if you do not have much polishing experience. Thanks to its orbital movement, a dual action polisher generates less heat and you are less likely to leave swirl marks on the surface. You can also polish by hand, but it takes considerably longer. The advantage of polishing by hand is that you can work more precisely.
Start with a coarse polishing compound and a coarse polishing pad, then work your way through medium and fine to superfine. You can go as far as a high-gloss, mirror-like finish.
