Plaster-bonded investment for glass casting
GRS Crystalcast M248 is a plaster-bonded powder developed specifically for casting glass. Thanks to its solids content and gas permeability, firing temperatures up to 900 °C are possible, depending on size even for up to 10 days. The investment is made for finely detailed glass work: the mould stays strong during firing and becomes powdery afterwards, so it is easy to remove. You mix 100 parts powder with 32 parts water and have approx. 4 minutes working time.
Key benefits
- For glass casting: developed specifically for glass and pâte de verre.
- Heat resistant: firing temperatures up to 900 °C.
- Strong during firing: the mould holds its shape.
- Easy to remove: the investment turns powdery after firing.
- Fine detail: suitable for detailed glass work.
Typical applications
- ✓ Glass casting using the lost-wax method
- ✓ Pâte de verre
- ✓ Finely detailed glass objects
Application
- Weigh powder and water accurately in a 100 : 32 ratio by weight. A different ratio affects the strength and behaviour of the mould. Work with clean materials and preferably mix under vacuum.
- Mix for approx. 4 minutes, long enough for a homogeneous mixture.
- Pour immediately after mixing; the working time is approx. 4 minutes.
- Let the mould set undisturbed and do not touch it.
- Remove the wax preferably with steam. This can take up to 4 hours; longer may damage the mould.
- Fire the mould: raise the kiln temperature by no more than 50 °C per hour to 850 °C and hold that temperature for approx. 30 hours, depending on size. Then cool at no more than 10 °C per hour. The drying time depends strongly on the thickness and the number of moulds in the kiln.
Points to note
- ✓ The powder can release dust containing crystalline silica. Work with as little dust as possible, with extraction or good ventilation, and wear a dust mask (FFP2 or FFP3).
- ✓ Protect the powder from frost and moisture. Stored dry, the shelf life is 12 months.
