Softener for softer, skin-like Elastosil FX silicones
Wacker Elastosil FX Softener is an additive that lowers the hardness of your Elastosil FX base rubber. This lets you achieve softer, flesh-like textures for skin effects. The Softener is not an inert silicone oil but a reactive component that is built into the silicone network. As a result the surface does not become oily, even at very low hardness. Bear in mind: the softer you make the silicone, the tackier the surface becomes. With 20 % Softener, Elastosil FX 20 for example drops from Shore A 20 to around Shore A 8.

Processing
- First weigh and mix the required amount of Elastosil FX component A and B.
- Calculate the amount of Softener on the total of A and B. Example: 100 g A + 100 g B + 20 g Softener is 10 %.
- Add the Softener and stir thoroughly again.
- Guide values according to Wacker: FX 20 reaches around Shore A 13 with 10 %, Shore A 8 with 20 %, Shore A 5 with 30 % and Shore A 2 with 40 %. FX 10 reaches around Shore A 7 with 10 %, Shore A 3 with 20 % and Shore A 2 with 30 %.
- Always make a test piece first to check hardness and tack.
Points to note
- ✓ There is an upper limit. If you add too much, the silicone no longer cures properly and a larger extractable fraction remains. At 50 % the surface is already very tacky.
- ✓ If you need softer than the Softener allows, choose a softer silicone from the same range rather than increasing the dosage further.
- ✓ Wacker has not carried out toxicological tests on the Softener itself. According to Wacker's Statement on Biocompatibility, adding it to ELASTOSIL raw materials is not expected to affect the biocompatibility results of those raw materials. You remain responsible for your finished product. We will send the statement on request.
- ✓ Elastosil FX is an addition-cure (platinum) silicone. Curing can be inhibited by substances such as sulphur, tin compounds and latex. Use nitrile gloves and, if in doubt, do a small test first.
- ✓ Store the product between 5 °C and 30 °C in the tightly closed original packaging. Close the packaging immediately after use and use up any remaining material as soon as possible.
- ✓ The best-before date of each batch is on the label. After that date the product is not automatically unusable, but check its properties before you use it.
