DIY Easy Slurry

This set contains all ingredients to make approximately 30 litres of periodically mixed, Shellspen-based slurry for the ceramic shell method yourself, including stucco.

The slurry does not need to stand in a continuously rotating tank, but it does require a fixed mixing schedule: mix for about half an hour on every day of use, and at least twice a week during periods without use. Never leave the slurry unmixed for more than 7 days.

The set gives you full control over the recipe. The individual ingredients keep for a long time when unmixed (see the date on the packaging).

The starter kit contains:

• 1 x 25 kg jerrycan Adbond Advantage
• 1 x 25 kg fused silica flour 325 mesh
• 1 x bag of Shellspen powder (suspension agent)
• 1 x bottle of drying indicator (optional; dose a maximum of 100 ml per 25 kg Adbond)
• 1 x 25 kg aluminium silicate sand, fine grain (0.2–0.5 mm)
• 1 x 25 kg aluminium silicate sand, coarser grain (0.5–1.0 mm)

Advantages

• No rotating slurry tank required: dip the model directly into a sealable container.
• Periodic mixing according to schedule instead of continuous mixing.
• Minimal waste: close the container after use and store it within the temperature limits.
• Easy to adapt to your own requirements.
• Can be used as both primary and back-up slurry.

Important

• Storage: Adbond binder at 5–30 °C, the prepared slurry at 15–25 °C (never below 5 °C or above 30 °C). Store frost-free; frozen binder or slurry is irreparably damaged.
• Mixing time when preparing: at least 4 hours, preferably 24 hours, with a mixer of no more than 2000 revolutions per minute.
• pH always above 9.5, measured with a pH meter.
• Adjusting: thicken with flour plus the corresponding Shellspen, thin with Adbond. Use demineralised water only, and only to top up evaporated water.
• Drying indicator: is a salt that makes the slurry less stable. Only use it when really necessary, and never more than 100 ml per 25 kg Adbond. Not recommended for beginners.
• This set is intended for professional users. Read the manual in full before you start and pass it on to your customer if you resell the set.

Aluminium silicate

Aluminium silicate is a good choice for the art caster. This product is mined in Europe, making it cheaper and more environmentally friendly. The shells are strong and reproduce the details of your artwork accurately. A shell with aluminium silicate has excellent refractoriness and high temperature stability.
