Suspension powder for a ceramic slurry you do not have to stir constantly
Shellspen suspension powder has been developed for ceramic slurries in the lost wax process. You dry-mix the powder into the flour and add it to the binder together with the flour. This keeps the solids in suspension much longer, so periodic mixing is enough instead of constant stirring. One 250 g bag is enough for 25 kg of fused silica flour 325 mesh, or a batch of 25 kg Adbond and 25 kg flour. This yields approximately 27 to 33 litres of slurry.

Processing
- Take 25 kg of fused silica flour 325 mesh (or 200 mesh).
- Dry-mix the entire contents of one bag of Shellspen into the flour.
- Pour 25 kg of Adbond (approximately 21 litres) into a drum of at least 30 litres, preferably 30 to 40 litres.
- Add the dry mix of flour and Shellspen to the Adbond through a sieve.
- Mix with a powerful mixer, for example a drill with a paddle mixer, until everything is homogeneous: approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Check every 5 minutes for dry grains at the bottom.
- Let the slurry rest for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.
- Sieve the slurry once more so that no lumps remain.
- Always mix the slurry thoroughly before use and close the drum during storage. The full method is described in the guide to periodically mixed slurry (PDF, in Dutch).
Points to note
- ✓ This is a separate recipe with finer flour (325 mesh instead of the usual 120 or 200 mesh), not the same slurry stirred less often.
- ✓ Start on the thin side (1:1). Thickening by adding flour is much easier than thinning a slurry that is too thick.
- ✓ While mixing in, the slurry temporarily needs more volume than the final volume. For 27 to 33 litres of slurry, allow a drum of 30 to 40 litres.
- ✓ If you only use part of a bag, homogenise the powder thoroughly before weighing.
- ✓ For aluminium we recommend Clayrac (aluminium silicate) as stucco, because a full fused silica shell can be harder to remove.
