Silicone Foam Closed Cell 3 is a two-component, platinum-catalysed addition-cure casting silicone that cures at room temperature and expands to up to three times its original volume. Naturally, this silicone can also be pigmented with silicone dye.

This silicone is used for filling seat cushions, for props and set decoration, and for filling flexible items such as bras, pillows and mattresses. It is also used to produce foam sheets and foam mats. Silicone foam is also well suited to sealing electronics and lithium batteries (application testing is essential).

  • High expansion
  • Returns reliably to its original shape after compression
  • High temperature and chemical resistance
  • Easy to process
  • Uniform density distribution throughout the entire casting.

Technical data

  • Mix ratio by weight: A:B = 100:100
  • Working time (pot life) at 25 °C: 3 minutes
  • Demoulding time at 25 °C: 50 minutes
  • Viscosity at 20 °C: 14,000 mPa·s
  • Colour: whitish, colourless
  • Hardness: Shore C 2–50 (Shore A 30–85), depending on expansion
  • Density at 20 °C: 0.352 g/cm³
  • Expansion factor (volume): 3
  • Closed cells

Please note: pot life and demoulding time depend strongly on temperature! At higher temperatures, both the working time and the demoulding time are shorter. The expansion factor is also highly temperature-dependent. Process the product at the stated temperature to achieve the properties described.

Processing

This silicone is easy to mix by hand or by machine. Mix Part A and Part B thoroughly in the specified ratio (100 parts A to 100 parts B by weight). Use the mixture within its pot life and do not demould until it has fully cured. If required, you can accelerate curing by applying heat. As a rule of thumb, every 10 degrees roughly halves the time. Bear in mind that air bubbles then have less time to escape.

Please note: the faster the silicone cures, the weaker the foaming effect. At higher temperatures the silicone cures faster, so the foam cannot fully develop. Silicone that is too cold also gives a poorer result, because the foam starts to collapse again.
Ideally, therefore, process the silicone at room temperature.

Working in a closed mould produces a more uniform foam.

Additional information

You can colour the silicone intensely with silicone dye.

Please note: this is an addition-cure silicone. Addition-cure silicones can be inhibited by sulphur, nitrogen, amine compounds and metal salts. If you are not sure whether the products you are using (including gloves, spatulas and cups) contain these substances, carry out a small test first. These substances are found in many latex gloves, some plasticines, lacquers and adhesives, condensation-cure silicones, one-component silicone sealants, natural rubbers and 3D printing materials (particularly stereolithography). If you still wish to use such materials, you will need to apply a protective layer of polyvinyl alcohol.

Shelf life

Provided the silicone is stored in its closed packaging in a cool, frost-free place, it has a shelf life of at least one year.

Safety

If you work with silicone frequently, we recommend wearing gloves during processing and ensuring good ventilation. For safety instructions, please refer to the safety data sheet.
