Fast Tin-Cure Catalyst for ELASTOSIL® M Condensation Silicones

Wacker® Catalyst T 40 is an organotin catalyst (organotin compound + silicate ester) specially developed as a fast hardener for condensation-curing ELASTOSIL® M RTV-2 silicones. T 40 is the standard catalyst for ELASTOSIL® M 4503 and the fast catalyst for ELASTOSIL® M 4400, M 4440, and M 4470. With a dosage of 2%, T 40 provides a pot life of approximately 30–50 minutes and a demolding time of 3–4 hours at 23°C / 50% RH — significantly faster than the T 37 catalyst. The viscosity is only 2 mPa·s, allowing the catalyst to mix homogeneously with the silicone base effortlessly.

T 40 can also be combined with Catalyst T 47 for even faster curing (blend ratio T 40:T 47 = 95:5 gives a pot life of ~20–40 min, demolding time ~4–6 hours). At 3% dosage, the pot life is approximately 30 minutes with a demolding time of 2 hours.

Properties

Fast catalyst for M-series condensation silicones: standard for M 4503, fast option for M 4400, M 4440, and M 4470.
Dosage 2–3% by weight: at 2% approximately 30–50 min pot life and 6–7 hours demolding time; at 3% approximately 30 min pot life and 2 hours demolding time.
Extremely low viscosity (2 mPa·s): mixes directly and homogeneously without clumping.
Compatible with T 47: blend for intermediate or very fast custom curing.
Colorless dark: neutral in color, does not significantly affect the final color of the silicone.

Dosage Table

The values below apply at 23°C / 50% relative humidity for ELASTOSIL® M 4400, M 4440, and M 4470:

2% T 40 → pot life 30–50 min, demolding time 6–7 hours
3% T 40 → pot life ~30 min, demolding time ~2 hours
T 40:T 47 = 95:5 at 5% total → pot life 20–40 min, demolding time 4–6 hours
T 40:T 47 = 90:10 at 5% total → pot life 10–20 min, demolding time 2–4 hours

Processing Instructions

Weigh the silicone base component and calculate the catalyst dosage (2–3 parts by weight T 40 per 100 parts by weight base).
Add the catalyst to the base and mix thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. Scrape the walls and bottom of the mixing vessel.
Process the mixture within the pot life. Never prepare more than can be processed within the pot life.
Pour into the mold and allow to cure at room temperature (min. 40% relative humidity). If humidity is too low, the surface may remain tacky.
Wait to demold until the silicone has fully cured.

Please note: pot life and demolding time are highly dependent on the dosage and humidity. At higher humidity or higher dosage, condensation silicones cure faster. More catalyst accelerates curing but also increases shrinkage and accelerates the aging of the mold.

Gloves of butyl rubber (thickness > 0.3 mm, breakthrough time > 480 min) compulsory. Chemical protective clothing recommended. In case of exposure above limit values: full-face mask with ABEK filter (EN 136/EN 14387). Always work in a well-ventilated area. Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. No static discharges.
