With silicones you give textiles grip, make them liquid-tight or protect them against heat. These are three different applications, each with its own type of silicone. For anti-slip you want a soft silicone with high friction, for a coating a thin, evenly flowing LSR and for heat resistance a coating with the right additives.

Below you can read, per application, how it works and which products from CHT, Wacker and Nanotech are intended for it.

Anti-slip: grip on socks, stockings and sportswear

Anti-slip is created with soft silicones that have a high coefficient of friction. The silicone is screen printed as dots, lines or logos, or coated as a band onto elastic. The anti-slip products below are usually around Shore A 20. For garters and hold-ups, by contrast, a very soft, slightly tacky silicone is used that stays in place on the skin.

2K or 1K? If you have a drying tunnel or oven and print in series, choose a 2K addition-cure system such as ALPATEC 30143 or 97072. If you work without an oven or in small quantities, an RTV-1 such as ELASTOSIL E91 or E92 N is simpler. In that case, allow for an acetic acid odour and a longer curing time.

Liquid-tight textile coating

A liquid-tight coating is usually applied to the fabric with a knife (knife coating) in a thin, even layer and then cured in an oven. Water does not wet a silicone surface, and the coating stays flexible over a wide temperature range. Applications include airbags, architectural textiles, synthetic leather, sleevings, conveyor belts and industrial and protective textiles.

Adhesion to synthetic fibres: for its coatings, Wacker recommends separate auxiliaries, such as CATALYST TC 44 for polyester, CATALYST 77 for polyamide and ADHESION PROMOTER HF 86. Which one you need depends on the fabric and the finish, so test beforehand.

Heat-resistant and flame-retardant coating

Silicone rubber remains elastic over a wide temperature range and burns to a white, silica-like ash. That is why it is used on architectural textiles, heat-resistant sleevings and protective clothing. For higher heat resistance or better fire performance, special additives are added.

⚠️ Flame retardancy is a property of the complete end product, not of the silicone alone. Have the coated fabric tested to the standard that applies to your application, for example EN ISO 11612 for protective clothing against heat and flame. With glass fabric, watch out for silane sizings: they can poison the platinum catalyst.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Vario or another casting silicone for anti-slip socks?

No. Casting silicones are too fluid, penetrate through the knit, bond poorly to polyester and polyamide and have not been tested for washing. Use an anti-slip grade such as CHT ALPATEC 30143 or Wacker ELASTOSIL E91.

Which hardness gives the most grip?

The softer, the more grip. The anti-slip products for socks are around Shore A 20 to 22. For garters, very soft, tacky types of around Shore A 12 to 14 are used. Too soft wears faster and feels sticky.

Is the anti-slip print wash-resistant?

Yes, with the right silicone, a clean substrate and a full cure. Only test wash resistance once the print has fully cured, using your own wash programme and temperature.

Does a silicone coating make textiles waterproof or only water repellent?

A closed silicone coating makes textiles liquid-tight. A silicone emulsion in the finish only makes them water repellent; the fabric then remains open. For that, see the page on silicone emulsions for water repellent textiles.
