Ceramic microspheres to make casting materials lighter

Omya Fillite 355 is a light grey filler made of hollow ceramic microspheres, filled with CO2 and nitrogen. You mix Fillite into a casting resin or other casting material to lower the density of the end product. The spheres are 5 to 355 µm in size (106 to 150 µm on average), have a bulk density of 350 to 480 g/l and a melting point of 1200 to 1350 °C. You can use them in polyurethane, silicone, epoxy, polyester, plaster, concrete, cement and similar products. In polyurethane with a mix ratio of polyol : iso : Fillite of 1 : 1 : 1 by weight, your casting weighs about 25 % less than without filler.

Key benefits

  • Lower weight: noticeably reduces the density of your casting.
  • Widely applicable: for resins, silicones and mineral casting materials.
  • Thicker pours: with filler you can cast exothermic casting products in thicker layers.
  • Strong spheres: compressive strength 1500 to 3000 psi.
  • Unlimited shelf life: provided you store the filler dry.

Typical applications

  • ✓ Lighter castings in polyurethane, epoxy and polyester
  • ✓ Weight saving in plaster, concrete and cement
  • ✓ Ornaments and decorative castings
  • ✓ Pastes and fillers at a high filler content

Processing

  1. Decide on the amount of filler: it depends on the material and the result you want.
  2. For polyurethane you can use polyol : iso : Fillite = 1 : 1 : 1 by weight. The casting then weighs about 75 % of a casting without filler.
  3. Mix the spheres in well, but not too long and not too intensively. Otherwise they break and lower the density less.
  4. The more filler, the more viscous the mixture. At an even higher filler content you get a paste.

Points to note

  • ✓ Broken spheres lose their effect; avoid vigorous or prolonged mixing.
  • ✓ With a new casting material, do a small test first to find the right dosage.
  • ✓ Supplied in 20 kg bags.
  • ✓ Unlimited shelf life when stored dry.
