Description
The powder is ideal for eliminating the grippy, tacky character of silicones, but can also be used to achieve a clean release between two layers of addition-cure silicone. Talcum powder also gives a fine cast surface when liquid metal is poured into a mould.
Applications:
Eliminating the anti-slip effect of silicone moulds
Silicones have an “anti-slip” property. Sometimes this is useful, but it often also causes a mould to deform when it is put down. When placing a silicone mould into its mould box, it is also helpful if the silicone slides neatly into place.
Release agent between two layers of silicone
If you have made a mould from addition-cure silicone and want to cast a model in it that is also made of addition-cure silicone, it is important to apply a good release layer. Talcum powder is the solution here. Besides providing a clean release, it also preserves the gloss of the mould on the model. Ideal!
Flow aid when casting metal
Talcum powder is an ideal aid for improving flow properties.
Applying talcum powder allows liquid metal (tin, aluminium, zamak, etc.) to flow better along the “mould wall”, so that the final cast surface becomes smoother and contains fewer air bubbles.
Processing
Apply the talcum powder carefully so that the entire surface is covered with a thin layer. Excess powder can be removed by holding the mould upside down or by blowing it off gently (with an air blow gun if necessary). Use a brush to easily reach deeper-lying areas.
