Blue platinum-cure addition silicone for mould making, concrete and artificial stone

ZA 22 Mould is a pourable, two-component platinum-cure addition silicone that cures at room temperature to a blue mould with a hardness of Shore A 22. The mix ratio is 1:1 by weight. The silicone flows well, cures without shrinkage and, at 20 N/mm, has a high tear strength, so moulds last for many casts.

Key benefits

  • High tear strength (20 N/mm): withstands repeated demoulding of undercuts.
  • Shrink-free cure: dimensionally stable moulds; curing can be accelerated with heat.
  • Excellent flow: fills fine details and sharp corners.
  • Elongation at break 480%: ample leeway when demoulding.
  • Mix ratio 1:1: easy weighing, no calculations.
  • Blue: high contrast with light-coloured casting materials such as plaster and concrete.

Typical applications

  • Mould making and core moulds where dimensional stability and precision matter.
  • Concrete casting and artificial stone, thanks to good compatibility with concrete mixes.
  • Sanitaryware and building elements.
  • Moulds for plaster, coatings and acrylic resins.
  • Epoxy, polyester and polyurethane resins only with a release agent; see the note below.

Processing

  1. Shake the base and catalyst separately to redisperse any sediment.
  2. Weigh out both components 1:1, using a separate spoon for each component. A deviation of up to 5% does not change the end result.
  3. Mix vigorously until the colour is uniform, scraping the bottom and sides as you go.
  4. Degas the mixture to prevent air bubbles and preferably pour from a height of approx. 30 cm.
  5. Demould after approx. 90 minutes at 23 °C. Use compressed air if necessary, and no sharp objects.
  6. You can pour a further layer within 24 hours: the new layer bonds to the first.

At 40 °C, pot life and curing time are roughly halved. At 4 °C, the pot life doubles and curing takes about three times as long.

Technical data

Colour of base and end product blue, catalyst white. Density 1.13 g/cm³. Viscosity of the mixture approx. 4,500 mPa·s. Pot life 15 minutes and curing time 90 minutes at 23 °C. Hardness Shore A 22 after 24 hours. Tensile strength approx. 4.5 N/mm², elongation at break approx. 480%, tear strength approx. 20 N/mm. Service temperature −40 to 200 °C. Typical values after 24 hours of vulcanisation at 23 °C, not intended for drawing up specifications.

Shelf life up to 12 months when stored between 5 and 27 °C. Do not mix up the caps of the base and catalyst.

⚠️ Casting polyurethane, epoxy or polyester

According to Zhermack's technical data sheet, you should apply a release agent to the mould before casting epoxy, polyester and PU resins to protect the silicone. If you skip this, the resin attacks the mould faster and the mould yields fewer casts. If you regularly cast polyurethane, choose a silicone that the manufacturer itself recommends for this, such as Dow Silastic RTV 3481 R, Wacker Elastosil M 4670 or Wacker Elastosil Vario 40. You will find the full overview under silicones for polyurethane casting resin, and a suitable release agent among our release agents.

Please note: inhibition of addition-cure silicones

This is a platinum-cure addition silicone. Curing can be inhibited by sulphur, nitrogen and tin compounds, latex gloves, some plasticines, condensation-cure silicones and certain 3D printing materials. The TDS also warns that some petroleum jellies can interfere with curing. If in doubt, carry out a small test first. Make sure the surface is clean, grease-free and dry.
