Iron powder for a genuine metal look and rust effect

A1 Iron Powder is a metal filler that you mix into A1 acrylic resin (Acrylic One) and other acrylic resins. After curing, you lightly sand the surface to expose the iron particles. You can then patinate the object or treat it like real metal and let a natural rust effect develop. Add the same weight of iron powder as the weight of A1 powder you use.

Key benefits

  • Genuine metal look: the surface consists of real iron particles.
  • Rust effect: let the object rust naturally or accelerate the process.
  • Cold and hot patination: treat the surface like metal.
  • Economical: you only use the powder in the visible outer layer.

Typical applications

  • ✓ Sculptures and ornaments with a cast-iron look
  • ✓ Set pieces and props with a rusty finish
  • ✓ Tiles, reliefs and wall objects

Application

  1. Mix the A1 acrylic resin according to the instructions: 2 parts powder to 1 part liquid.
  2. Add the same weight of iron powder as the A1 powder. Example for a 30 x 30 cm mould: 200 g liquid, 400 g A1 powder and 400 g iron powder.
  3. Mix until homogeneous and apply as the first, visible layer in the mould or on the object.
  4. Reinforce the rest of the object with unfilled A1 acrylic resin.
  5. After curing, sand the outer layer with a wet sanding sponge or waterproof sandpaper to bring the iron particles to the surface.
  6. To accelerate rusting, treat the surface with a suitable patina or rusting agent. Stop the process with water and soda once you have the result you want.
  7. Protect the finished result with A1 Sealer Plus. Without sealer, the rusting process continues naturally.

Points to note

  • ✓ Do not colour the whole mass; only the outermost, visible layer gets iron powder.
  • ✓ If you use acids or ammonia to patinate, wear gloves and eye protection and work in a well-ventilated area.
  • ✓ Indefinite shelf life when stored dry.
