Premium Clear Silicone Gel for Professional Electronics and Optics Applications
Silicone Addition Gel 840 Clear is a pourable, addition-curing (platinum) RTV-2 silicone that cures at room temperature into a crystal-clear, colourless gel. Both components are colourless and are mixed 1:1 by weight (100 parts A to 100 parts B). With a viscosity of 125 cSt the mixture is very free-flowing and self-degassing. The pot life is 80 minutes at 22 °C; after 24 hours at 20 °C the gel is functionally crosslinked and after 2 days it is fully cured. The cured gel has a penetration of 60 (1/10 mm) and therefore remains soft: measuring points on electronic components can still be reached with a test probe, after which the gel closes again sufficiently against moisture when worked carefully. With a dielectric strength of 15 kV/mm and a volume resistivity of 3 × 1015 Ω·cm, Gel 840 is ideally suited for potting electronics and optical components.
Key Benefits
- Crystal clear and colourless: after mixing the gel becomes completely clear – above 30 °C a very faint yellowish tinge may develop over time, which is not a problem for most potting applications.
- Viscosity 125 cSt: very free-flowing and self-degassing – the mixture penetrates into the smallest gaps around components.
- Penetration 60 (1/10 mm): soft, shock-absorbing gel – measuring points remain accessible and the gel closes again against moisture after being pierced.
- Dielectric strength 15 kV/mm: electrically insulating with a volume resistivity of 3 × 1015 Ω·cm – suitable for protecting circuit boards and modules.
- Pot life 80 minutes at 22 °C: ample time to weigh, degas and pour – even for larger potting volumes.
- Mix ratio 1:1 by weight: easy to weigh and to mix by hand or by machine – A and B are always supplied in equal quantities.
Typical Applications
- Potting of circuit boards and electronic modules that must remain measurable afterwards
- Protecting and insulating sensors and electronics against moisture, vibration and shock
- Embedding optical components where a clear, colourless layer is required
- Potting lighting objects and light art, such as the application by Hypar Collective in the video on this page
- Encapsulating small electronic assemblies in prototyping and small production runs
Processing instructions:
- Stir component A and component B separately and thoroughly before use.
- Weigh both components accurately in a 1:1 ratio by weight (100 parts A to 100 parts B). Only use A and B components with the same lot number, mixing different lots can cause curing problems.
- Mix carefully but slowly, preferably in a figure-of-eight motion, by hand or by machine until homogeneous, without stirring in air.
- Preferably degas the mixture in a vacuum chamber immediately after mixing to prevent air bubbles.
- Pour the mixture within the pot life of 80 minutes (22 °C).
- Allow the gel to cure: functionally crosslinked after 24 hours at 20 °C, fully cured after 2 days. Curing in an oven speeds up the process, but leaves more air bubbles in the gel. Pot life and cure time are highly temperature dependent: the warmer, the shorter both become.
The gel can be coloured with silicone colourant, either intensely or while remaining clear. Stored in a closed container, cool and frost-free, the product has a shelf life of at least 1 year. The components are always supplied as a set and are not available separately; for larger pack sizes, please contact us.

Important Warning: Inhibition with Addition Silicones
Please note: This is an addition-curing silicone (platinum cure). Curing can be inhibited by sulphur, nitrogen, amine compounds and metal salts. If you are not sure whether the materials you use (including gloves, spatulas and cups) contain these substances, do a small test first. Inhibiting substances are found in, among others, latex gloves, some plasticines, adhesives and lacquers, condensation silicones, silicone sealant, natural rubber and 3D printing materials (especially stereolithography). On an inhibiting surface, apply a barrier layer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA).

Safety Information
Component A is not classified as hazardous under the CLP Regulation (EC) 1272/2008. Component B is classified as a flammable liquid category 3 (H226: flammable liquid and vapour, flash point approx. 28 °C) and as toxic to reproduction category 2 (H361f: suspected of damaging fertility), signal word Warning. Component B contains 1 to 5 % octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4). Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably with local exhaust ventilation, and keep the product away from heat, sparks and open flames; take precautions against static discharge. Wear protective gloves to EN 374, tight-fitting safety goggles (a face shield where there is a risk of splashing) and suitable protective clothing. With insufficient ventilation or when handling larger quantities, respiratory protection with filter type ABEK is required. For full information, consult the safety data sheets for component A and component B on this page; the safety data sheet supplied with the product is authoritative. For transport, component B falls under UN1993, class 3, packing group III.| Safety Pictograms | Safety Data Sheets (SDS) |
