Linear silicone blend for a silky soft feel in skin and hair care
BRB 1740 is a clear solution of dimethiconol gum in a low-viscosity dimethicone (INCI: Dimethicone (and) Dimethiconol). The product is 100% silicone, contains 12% dimethiconol and has a viscosity of approx. 1500 mm²/s. In cosmetic formulations BRB 1740 gives the skin a soft, silky feel and gives hair shine and a strong conditioning effect. Because the carrier is a linear dimethicone rather than cyclopentasiloxane (D5), BRB 1740 is the future-proof alternative to BRB 1840.
Key benefits
- Silky soft skin feel: leaves the skin feeling smooth, silky and cared for.
- Better spreadability: formulations are easier to apply and spread well, in any type of formula.
- Breathable protective layer: forms a non-occlusive, non-comedogenic film on skin and hair.
- Substantivity: helps other actives adhere better to the skin surface.
- Film-forming and water-resistant: the effect lasts, even on contact with water.
- Shine and conditioning: gives hair shine, repairs it and protects it from external damage.
BRB 1740 or BRB 1840?
- → Both products contain dimethiconol gum and have a comparable viscosity of approx. 1500 mm²/s.
- → BRB 1840 uses cyclopentasiloxane (D5) as the carrier. It evaporates after application, giving a drier skin feel, but D5 falls under the European REACH restriction for cosmetics.
- → BRB 1740 uses a non-volatile, linear dimethicone as the carrier. This makes the formulation less dependent on the D5 restriction, and the film stays on skin and hair for longer.
⚠️ Cyclic siloxanes as impurities
BRB 1740 does not contain D5 as a carrier, but it does contain traces of cyclic siloxanes from the production process. According to the current safety data sheet (version 7, 1 August 2023) these are cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) 0.025 to 0.1% and cyclopentasiloxane (D5) and cyclohexasiloxane (D6) each below 0.1%. D4, D5 and D6 fall under REACH Annex XVII, entry 70, with a maximum of 0.1% per substance in cosmetics. The raw material questionnaire dates from 2019; for the current composition the safety data sheet is authoritative.
