Make your own PU tracks - Tank Track Skateboard

For the caterpillar skateboard I'm working on I needed rubber blocks for the tread of the caterpillar so I have more grip and don't damage the asphalt. Unfortunately I couldn't find any standard parts so we'll just make it ourselves from PU rubber.

With pu, also called polyurethane, you can do a lot of different things. It comes in all different types, hard, soft, transparent and you can make it in almost any color you want.

Today I am going to cast soft PU, or PU Rubber. The advantages of this are that it is not very expensive and strong and wear-resistant. Ideal for the caterpillar track!

And of course we need a mold! I chose to mill the mold on my cnc mill from a piece of PVC.

If you don't have this available there are other options such as making a mold out of wood or 3D printing. You could also make the master model and then make a silicone mold from it.

Watch the video quickly to see all the steps you need to take to make cool rubber parts yourself.

The flexible PU used in the video is PT Flex 85 Flexible Polyurethane.

There are many cool collaborations to come, so follow the Practical Engineer on youtube or on his website and keep an eye on our blog!
