What is Silicone Adhesive (RTV-1 Silicone Adhesive)?

Our 1-component silicone adhesives / silicone glues are RTV-1 (room-temperature vulcanising) systems that cure through atmospheric moisture. They serve as a silicone adhesive sealant: one product that both bonds and seals.

Available in neutral-cure (alkoxy/oxime) and acetic-cure (acetoxy) versions, with variants from transparent "clear RTV" to black, and in flowable or thixotropic, paste-like consistencies.

Key Properties

  • 1-component: straight from the tube/cartridge; no mixing required
  • Bonding + sealing: one product for gluing and sealing
  • Substrates: metal, glass, ceramics, many plastics* and painted parts
  • Performance: temperature resistant, elastic, durable

*Check the datasheet and primer advice; some plastics (PE/PP/PTFE) require pretreatment.

Wacker Elastosil RTV-1 Product Overview (PDF)

Choosing a silicone adhesive: cure system, colour and processing

Neutral vs acetic

  • ✓Neutral (alkoxy/oxime): non-corrosive, widely applicable
  • ✓Acetic (acetoxy): excellent adhesion to glass/ceramics

Transparent or black

  • →Transparent: "clear RTV" for inconspicuous joints
  • →Black/white/grey: appearance, contrast or light-tight

Flowable vs paste

  • →Flowable: self-levelling, capillary flow
  • →Paste: thixotropic, non-slump on vertical surfaces

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is there a difference between silicone adhesive and silicone sealant?

In practice we use the umbrella term silicone adhesive sealant: one product that both bonds and seals. The difference lies mainly in viscosity (flowable vs paste) and in the cure system (neutral vs acetic).

When should I choose a neutral rather than an acetic silicone adhesive?

Neutral (alkoxy/oxime) is non-corrosive and widely applicable (glass, metals, electronics). Acetic (acetoxy) adheres very well to glass/ceramics, but can attack certain metals.

Does RTV-1 adhere to metal and glass without a primer?

Often it does, but the highest and most durable adhesion is achieved through thorough cleaning/degreasing and, where necessary, a suitable primer/adhesion promoter. Consult the datasheet.
