How to make a mold with two component silicone

What does food safe mean for silicone?

There is no quality mark or certificate that declares a silicone rubber to be food safe. What does exist are two kinds of documents, and the difference between them determines what you can demonstrate with them.

A conformity declaration by the manufacturer

The producer of the raw material declares that the ingredients meet a standard. That is a statement about the material as supplied, not about the mold you make from it. The standards you will encounter in this category:

  • Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 is the European framework for materials intended to come into contact with food. Article 3 states that a material must not transfer constituents to food in quantities that endanger health or bring about an unacceptable change in the composition, taste or odor of the food.
  • Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 does not apply to silicones. Silicones are excluded from it. There is no specific European implementing measure for silicones, which is why national rules and recommendations determine the picture.
  • BfR Recommendation XV Silicones is a recommendation of the German Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, not a law. Its core requirement is a maximum of 0.5 percent volatile and 0.5 percent extractable substances in the cured elastomer, plus a maximum of 50 mg platinum residue per kilogram of finished product.
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 is the United States rule for rubber articles intended for repeated food contact. The FDA does not approve and does not certify silicones. A product either meets the extraction limits or it does not. Note that many European manufacturers do not issue a general declaration for the United States, but provide a food contact statement on request.
  • LFGB § 31 is German legislation. Testing against it is carried out by an accredited laboratory and results in a test report, not a certificate.

A test report from an independent laboratory

Here a sample has actually been tested, for example for extractable substances in water and n-hexane, for volatiles, or sensorially according to DIN 10955. A test report is stronger evidence than a declaration, but it applies to the sample tested and to the parameters tested.

⚠️ What none of these documents say

No document in this category declares that your finished mold is food safe. That is your responsibility as the maker of the finished article. Conditions that almost always apply:

  • → Weigh accurately and mix completely according to the stated ratio. Incompletely mixed silicone does not cure fully and retains migratable substances.
  • → Cure fully and then post cure. Post curing drives out residual volatiles. Without that step a fresh mold does not always reach the limit of 0.5 percent volatiles, and then the declaration for the raw material does not apply to your mold.
  • → Clean thoroughly before the first food contact.
  • → Every addition changes the composition. Pigment, thickener or silicone oil falls outside the declaration for the raw material, unless the supplier issues a separate declaration for it.
  • → These documents say nothing about skin contact, biocompatibility or medical use.

Wacker Elastosil® Cat. Vario
Separate catalyst for Vario 15 and Vario 40

Wacker points out that the platinum limit stated in the declaration for this catalyst has to be observed, a maximum of 50 mg platinum residue per kilogram of finished product.

Bonding, repairing and sealing

To join or repair cured silicone, and to seal kitchen equipment, you use a one component silicone sealant. These cure with moisture from the air and release acetic acid while doing so. They may only come into contact with food once they are fully cured and no vinegar odor is released any more.

Coloring and thickening

Coloring

If you want to color the silicone, choose from our silicone pigments only the versions with the designation FDA after the color name. For the other colors and for the fluorescent versions the supplier does not issue a food contact declaration.

Making it thicker

If you want to make a casting silicone thicker or spreadable, use fumed silica and not a thixotropic agent. Fumed silica is chemically inert silicon dioxide, whereas thixotropic agents contain additives for which no food contact declaration exists.

Matting and reducing tackiness

Momentive Silopren® LSR Topcoat HE is a two component coating that gives a silicone surface a matte finish and lowers friction. The Momentive technical data sheet lists the product as suitable for meeting the food contact rules FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 and BfR Recommendation XV. Momentive explains that the raw materials used are compliant in terms of composition, and that it is up to the user to establish that the finished product meets those requirements under their own processing conditions. No migration or extraction testing of the finished product is therefore supplied. Note that this is an industrial product that cures in a hot air oven at 100 to 180 °C and is not suitable for home use, and that component A consists of 90 to 100 percent decamethylcyclopentasiloxane, which has been restricted for consumer and professional use under REACH Annex XVII since 6 June 2026. That constituent evaporates during curing in the oven, but full curing and good ventilation are a condition for this.

Bear in mind for both: every addition changes the composition. Strictly speaking, the conformity declaration for the raw material no longer covers the modified mixture. For critical applications, have the finished product assessed.

How to make a mold that is genuinely suitable for food contact

  • Weigh accurately. Use a scale, not your eye. A deviating mixing ratio results in a mold that does not cure fully.
  • Mix completely. Scrape the walls and the bottom of the mixing cup as well. Unmixed material stays tacky and retains migratable substances.
  • Degas or pour carefully. Air pockets at the mold surface are places where food residues stay behind.
  • Cure fully and then post cure. For most products in this category 2 to 3 hours at 100 to 140 °C is sufficient. For SilSo Replicate 21003 the manufacturer specifies 4 hours at 200 °C. Do not let the mold come into contact with a heating element.
  • Clean before first use. Wash the mold with dish soap and dry it well.
  • Watch out for inhibition. Addition cure silicones are poisoned by sulfur, nitrogen, amines, metal salts and tin compounds. These are found in latex gloves, many plastilines, condensation cure silicones, one component sealant, natural rubber, onion and garlic, and in stereolithography prints, among other things. If in doubt, run a small test first.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an FDA certificate for silicone?

No. The FDA does not certify and does not approve silicones. FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 sets extraction limits for rubber articles intended for repeated food contact. A manufacturer can declare that its product meets them, or have that demonstrated by a laboratory with an extraction test. Both are something other than a certificate.

Is my mold food safe as soon as I use a food safe silicone?

No. The declaration applies to the raw material as supplied. Whether your mold is suitable depends on accurate weighing and mixing, full curing, post curing and cleaning. The responsibility for the finished article lies with you as its maker.

Why do I have to post cure?

Post curing drives residual volatiles out of the cured silicone. BfR Recommendation XV sets a limit of 0.5 percent volatile substances in the cured elastomer. Without post curing a fresh mold does not always reach that value, and then the declaration for the raw material does not apply to your mold.

Can I use a condensation cure silicone for a culinary mold?

We do not advise it. Condensation cure silicones release a cleavage product while curing, usually an alcohol, and the tin catalyst used falls outside the food contact declarations you will find in this category. All casting silicones in this category are addition cure, also known as platinum cure.

Which hardness should I choose?

For pralines, chocolate and confectionery with undercuts, a soft silicone of Shore A 10 to 30 works most comfortably, because you push the product out of the mold easily. For large or flat shapes, or when the mold has to stay dimensionally stable, choose Shore A 40 or higher. A higher elongation at break means the mold can stretch further before it tears, which helps with deep undercuts.

Why does my mold become greasy and tacky over time?

Silicones absorb fats and oils. That is inherent to the material and cannot be prevented, but it can usually be remedied. Read our guide on using silicone molds in the kitchen for this.

Silicone molds get soiled by fats, oils and colorants from food. That is inherent to the material, but it can usually be remedied well.
